That Noise Your Brakes Are Making: A Translation Guide

Brakes tell you what's wrong if you know the vocabulary. Here's how to translate what you're hearing before you call. A high-pitched squeal that goes away when you press the pedal is the wear indicator — a small metal tab designed to contact the rotor and make exactly that noise when the pads get low. That's the system working as intended. Schedule the job, don't panic. Grinding, a metal-on-metal sound, is different. The friction material is gone and the backing plate is against the rotor. Every stop from here is cutting into the rotor, and possibly the caliper. Stop driving it. A pulsing you feel through the pedal or the steering wheel under braking is usually thickness variation in the rotor. People call this warped rotors, but in normal street driving the metal rarely warps from heat. It's typically uneven pad material transfer or a seized caliper slide pin — which is why the salt conversation and the brake conversation are the same conversation here. A soft or sinking pedal is the one to take seriously. That's hydraulic: air in the system, a leaking line, or a failing master cylinder. Don't drive on it, don't "keep an eye on it." Have it towed or bring it straight in. Pulling to one side under braking usually means one caliper is dragging or a flex hose has collapsed internally and isn't releasing pressure. Two things that save people a wasted trip. Rust squeal on the first few stops after rain or snow is normal — a light film of surface rust forms on the rotors overnight and scrubs off in a few stops. And mileage alone doesn't tell you much: a highway car can be on its original pads and still have a seized caliper or corroded hardware, because highway driving barely uses the brakes at all while town driving eats them. For what it's worth on numbers: new pad material is usually somewhere around 10 to 12 millimeters, and most shops call it at about 3. Rotors have a minimum thickness stamped right on them, and that stamped number is the real spec for your car.
